About Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City is the capital city for the state of Utah, and is also the most populous city in the state. Salt Lake City is as well the principal city in the Salt Lake City Metropolitan region that has a population of more than 1.1 million. The pioneers initially encountered an arid and inhospitable valley, which they ultimately irrigated and cultivated. Salt Lake City’s current street grid system has its basis on the north – south – east – west grid plan that was laid by the early LDS church leaders.
Due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, this Utah city was named Great Salt Lake City, but was later on abbreviated to Salt Lake City by the 17th Utah Territorial Legislature in the year 1868. Immigration of global members of the LDS church, mining booms and the building of the 1st transcontinental railway resulted in the economic growth of Salt Lake City.
